LATIN NAME: NERIUM OLEANDER ‘CALYPSO’
The Basics
The red-flowered ‘Calypso’ is a large shrub with green foliage and greater cold tolerance than most oleanders. Leathery, linear, lance-shaped leaves line the branches throughout the year and emit white latex when broken. The flowers appear all year-round, but bloom most heavily from late winter to early summer.
The Needs
Amount of Sunlight: Full Sun
Amount of Water: Drought Tolerant, Water Regularly
Soil Conditions: Well drained
Cold Hardiness Zone: 8-11
The Care
Oleanders are very drought tolerant but develop a better floral display and overall form if they receive regular water and good growing conditions. Oleander is a popular hedge plant that is often heavily sheared. Shearing is less desirable because it reduces flower production. It is preferable to shape plants selectively with prudent hand pruning. This can be messy due to the white latex the stems emit when cut. Oleander is an excellent plant for difficult areas. It may be planted in large containers, as a specimen shrub, in mixed plantings or for screening.
